In 1Chronicles 12:32 we read about certain sons of Issachar who were “men who understood the times, with knowledge of what Israel should do”. These men came to assist David to become king. Saul, the king, was dead.
A season had passed and a new season was upon them. These men had an insight into the seasons of YHWH, and this insight assisted them to make good decisions for the betterment of the nation as a whole.
Gen 8:22 “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.”
YHWH created seasons. Seasons are patterns which repeat themselves unerringly. Season follows season with predictable repetition, just like day follows night, and summer follows winter.
1Thes 5:1 “Now as to the times and the epochs [seasons] brethren, you have no need for anything to be written to you.
5:2 “For you know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night.
5:3 “While they are saying ‘peace and safety!’ then destruction will come upon them suddenly like birth pangs upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
5:4 “But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day should overcome you like a thief;
5:5 “For you are all sons of light and sons of day.
5:6 “We are not of night nor of darkness; so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober …”
When we read the Scripture as a whole, we find that there are many patterns (seasons) which run as themes through the Bible. They are like different coloured threads of a beautiful tapestry. When we stand back, the big picture becomes clear. Each colour is a theme and each adds its own beauty to the picture as a whole.
Understanding these patterns and themes will help us to understand the times in which we live. The end times is surely the culmination of all these seasonal patterns.
These patterns and themes tell us where we have come from and where we are going to. They tell us how things are going to end. They help us discern between truth and deception. They give us hope because we see that the Almighty has all things perfectly planned. Nothing catches Him off guard.
